Homecoming had come too fast, and I wasn’t ready for it. At all. Seth would be picking me up at any time, and my heart pounded just thinking about it. Grandma stepped back from doing my hair and smiled.

“Oh, you’re so beautiful. Seth won’t know what hit him.” She grabbed her camera and snapped a picture. “Helen? We’re ready!”

Mom came into the room and her hands flew to her chest. “Oh, sweetie. I can’t believe it.”

I stood and turned to look in the mirror. Grandma had outdone herself. My hair was up in a French twist with small butterfly clips throughout it. The makeup she’d chosen was glittery and made me look much older and sophisticated.

“Wait.” Mom touched my hair and small bits of glitter appeared then faded.

I turned my head to see where it went and caught small glints of it in the mirror. “Cool.”

“I learned that trick a while ago.” Mom smiled and applied some to my cheeks as well.

Grandma sighed. “And here I thought we were going to stay away from the spells for vanity.”

“Hey, it’s Homecoming.” Mom twisted the loose hairs around my face with her fingers and whispered each time just before she let go. This time I caught the words. “You try.”

“How about I try when my date isn’t about to pick me up? I may end up with a head full of insane curls if I try it now.” I reapplied my lip gloss and stepped away from the mirror. “How do I look?”

“Like the princess I’ve always known you are. Except those shoes. Please let me make them into heels.” Grandma’s hand twitched.

I shook my head. “No heels. I like my sneakers.”

“And you know what to do if the magic tries to control you again?” Mom’s eyes glistened as she stared at me.

“Run. Like Cinderella from the ball. Although, I don’t think I’ll be losing these shoes like she did.” I pulled on the gloves Grandma had bought me. They were black to accent the blue, but also because Grandma knew it was the only way I’d wear them. And she was right. They were perfect.

Mom laughed. “You never did understand that part of the story. Now, you have your phone with you?”

“Yes, Mom.” I smoothed out my dress and checked the mirror one more time. It didn’t matter if Seth didn’t like what he saw. I thought I looked pretty amazing, and to me, that’s what counted. Mostly. I left Grandma’s room and walked into the kitchen to wait for Seth. Butterflies erupted in my stomach. I was sure I’d lose my dinner if Seth offered to take me anywhere to eat. I shouldn’t have said yes to him. I should have made an excuse not to go.

“Wait. We forgot one more thing.” Grandma held a long black box. She opened it to reveal a necklace with a large black opal stone set into it. She set down the box and fastened the chain around my neck. “This was your great-grandmother’s necklace.
